The visit of Cardinal Antoine Kambanda, Archbishop of Kigali, to SUNY Polytechnic Institute has opened new pathways for strategic academic collaboration between Rwanda and the United States. During the visit, Cardinal Kambanda engaged with university leadership, faculty, students and administrators to explore opportunities for strengthening education, research, innovation and community engagement at CUR.
The engagement identified promising areas of collaboration, including STEM education, artificial intelligence, data science, digital transformation, health sciences, entrepreneurship, innovation and online learning.
For CUR students, these opportunities could provide access to international learning experiences, online courses, short programmes, academic pathways, collaborative research and practical projects. Such opportunities would strengthen technical skills, creativity, innovation and employability while exposing students to global academic and professional environments.
For academic and research staff, collaboration with SUNY Poly could create opportunities for faculty development, joint research, curriculum innovation, knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration. It could also strengthen CUR’s capacity in emerging areas such as AI, engineering, health informatics, digital education and applied research.
The partnership also has significant potential for communities and Rwanda as a whole. By connecting academic knowledge with real-world challenges, CUR and its partners can develop practical solutions in health, education, technology, entrepreneurship and community development. The collaboration can therefore contribute to skills development, innovation, job creation and Rwanda’s transition towards a knowledge- and technology-driven economy.
Through this strategic engagement, CUR continues to strengthen its commitment to internationalization, academic excellence, innovation and transformative education for sustainable national and regional development.
